ELIZABETH I, CARVED OAK JOINED STOOL

England, Circa 1600

This rather interesting and rare Elizabeth I carved joint stool, has deep flattened arch shaped rails that showcase rows of bold gouge carving, the four turned columnar legs are united by plain stretchers all around.


An example of this rare form of stool can be found in Tobias Jellinek's book, Early British Chairs and Seats, page 223, plate 282, shown here to the right.
